Electromagnetic Fields – An Introductory Overview of EMFs & How to Mitigate EMF Exposure

Electromagnetic fields (EMFs) are all around us. They are present in our homes, workplaces, and even in the air we breathe. EMFs are invisible lines of energy that radiate from sources such as power lines, electrical wiring, and wireless devices. While they are a natural part of our environment, some studies suggest that prolonged exposure to high levels of EMFs may have adverse effects on our health.
 
I’ll be straightforward and state that I really had no idea what EMFs were a few years ago. I grew up with technology and was using a laptop daily since junior high. I had my first phone by seventh grade and my first smartphone by my sophomore year of high school.
 
I was a part of the millennial generation’s wave of technology overuse and stimulation overdose. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I started hearing about the negative effects of the forces and radiation emitted from these devices all around us.
 
I would hear and read from some of my favorite health coaches and scientists discuss how harmful EMFs could be, yet I had no idea how they worked or what I could even do to avoid these damaging frequencies.

So what are EMFs?

EMFs are a type of radiation produced by the movement of electrically charged particles. This radiation is present in natural sources such as the sun, the Earth’s magnetic field, and lightning. It is also produced by man-made sources such as power lines, cell phones, Wi-Fi routers, and appliances. While EMFs from natural sources are generally low, man-made sources can emit high levels of EMFs that may be harmful to our health.

Our homes’ most common sources of EMFs are power lines, electrical wiring, and appliances. Power lines can emit high levels of EMFs, especially if they are located close to homes or workplaces. Electrical wiring and appliances, such as computers, televisions, and microwaves, can also emit high levels of EMFs.

How are EMFs generated?

EMFs are generated whenever there is a flow of electric current. Electronic devices such as cell phones, laptops, and Wi-Fi routers all generate EMFs. Power lines and transformers also generate EMFs because they are used to transmit electricity over long distances.

The amount of EMF generated by electronic devices depends on several factors, including the strength of the electric current, the distance from the device, and the frequency of the radiation. The higher the frequency, the more energy the radiation contains, and the more potentially harmful it can be.

The strength of an EMF is measured in units of volts per meter (V/m) or milligauss (mG). EMFs are classified into two categories: ionizing and non-ionizing. Ionizing EMFs are high-energy radiation, such as X-rays and gamma rays, which have enough energy to ionize atoms and break molecular bonds. Non-ionizing EMFs, such as those produced by electronic devices, do not have enough energy to break molecular bonds.

Are EMFs dangerous to our health?

The effects of EMFs on our health are still being studied, but some studies suggest that prolonged exposure to high levels of EMFs may have adverse effects on our health. These effects can vary depending on the frequency, intensity, and duration of exposure. While the scientific community is still divided on the potential health risks associated with EMFs, there is growing concern about the potential dangers they pose to our health. Some studies have suggested that exposure to EMFs can lead to a range of health problems, including cancer, neurological disorders, and reproductive issues.

Cancer:

One of the most well-known health risks associated with EMFs is cancer. Studies have shown that long-term exposure to high levels of EMFs may increase the risk of certain types of cancer, including leukemia, brain cancer, and breast cancer. A study conducted by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found that exposure to high levels of EMFs from sources such as power lines and electrical wiring may be a potential cause of cancer. The IARC classified EMFs as “possibly carcinogenic to humans” in their 2011 study.

A study published in the journal Environmental Research in August 2018 found a link between EMF exposure and an increased risk of glioma, a type of brain cancer. The study found that people who used cell phones for more than 25 years had a three-fold increased risk of glioma. Another study published in the International Journal of Cancer in May 2014 showed a statistically significant association between long-term mobile phone use (defined as 10 or more years) and an increased risk of glioma. The authors conclude that their findings “provide support for the hypothesis that long-term mobile phone use may be associated with an increased risk of glioma,” but note that the available evidence is limited and more research is needed to confirm this association.

Neurological Disorders:

There is also evidence to suggest that EMFs may have an impact on our neurological health. A study published in the Journal of Environmental Health Perspectives in 2015 found that exposure to EMFs was associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.

One study, published in the Journal of Chemical Neuroanatomy in 2016, investigated the effects of chronic exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs) on the central nervous system. The researchers exposed rats to RF-EMFs for 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, for a total of 12 weeks. They found that the exposed rats exhibited significant changes in the structure and function of their hippocampus, a brain region that is critical for learning and memory. Specifically, the exposed rats showed a decrease in the number of neurons and synapses in the hippocampus, as well as impaired memory and learning abilities. The authors suggest that these findings “raise concerns about the potential long-term effects of chronic RF-EMF exposure on brain function.”

Another study, published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives in 2018, investigated the association between prenatal exposure to EMFs and the risk of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The researchers analyzed data from the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort Study, which included over 90,000 mother-child pairs. They found that children who were exposed to high levels of EMFs during pregnancy had a higher risk of developing ASD than those who were not exposed. Specifically, the risk of ASD was increased by 27% in children whose mothers reported high levels of EMF exposure during pregnancy. While the authors caution that more research is needed to confirm this association, they suggest that “limiting exposure to EMFs during pregnancy may be an important public health strategy to reduce the incidence of ASD”.

Reproductive Issues:

There is increasing fear about the potential adverse effects of EMF exposure on reproductive health. Numerous studies have investigated the association between EMF exposure and reproductive issues, including decreased fertility, decreased sperm quality, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. A study published in the journal Fertility and Sterility in 2012 found that men who used laptop computers on their laps had significantly reduced sperm motility and viability.

A review of 27 studies found that EMF exposure was associated with decreased sperm motility, decreased sperm count, and abnormal sperm morphology in men. Additionally, a study of men employed in the telecommunications industry found that those with high EMF exposure had significantly lower sperm count and motility compared to those with low exposure.

In women, exposure to EMFs has been linked to an increased risk of miscarriage, preterm delivery, and reduced fetal growth. A study of pregnant women found that those with high EMF exposure had a significantly increased risk of miscarriage.

Furthermore, animal studies have also demonstrated the adverse effects of EMF exposure on reproductive health. A study on mice found that exposure to EMFs resulted in decreased fertility, reduced sperm count, and increased embryo mortality.

While the exact mechanisms of how EMF exposure affects reproductive health are not fully understood, it is suggested that EMFs may cause oxidative stress, disrupt hormonal balance, and affect the function of the reproductive organs.

Overall, the evidence suggests a link between EMF exposure and reproductive issues, particularly in men.

Other potential health risks associated with EMFs include:

  1. Cardiovascular problems: Some studies suggest that exposure to high levels of EMFs may increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

  2. Immune system problems: Prolonged exposure to high levels of EMFs may weaken the immune system and make us more susceptible to infections and illnesses.

  3. Sleep problems: Exposure to high levels of EMFs may interfere with our sleep patterns and cause insomnia.

How can we reduce our exposure and impact from EMFs?

There is plenty more evidence to prove the point that EMFs are harmful to our well-being, but I think I’ve provided sufficient data for an introductory EMF crash course.
